Significance of Upanayanam
The Upanayanam makes the boy eligible for the study of the Vedas. Literally Upanayanam means 'taking near'. Upa means 'near' and nayanam means 'going'; that is the act of going to a teacher to learn. Yagnopavitha Dhaaranam or putting on the Holy thread is performed during the Upanayanam ceremony to the brahmachari boy. The boy is taught the Gãyathri Manthra by his father or teacher. After the upanayanam, the brahmachari boy is expected to recite the Gayatri Mantra and perform Sandhya rituals three times every day.
